  • Payless ShoeSource has decided to close its stores in the United States and Puerto Rico.

  • All 2,100 locations will be dissolved by May 2019.

  • Liquidation sales have already begun.

Payless ShoeSource announced on Friday that it is closing all 2,100 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. According to CNN Business, locations will start closing in March and all will be dissolved by May.

The New York Times reports that the company filed for bankruptcy two years ago, and had closed 400 locations in the United States and Canada during that time. Last week, the company filed again for bankruptcy and ultimately made the decision to close its doors.

As of Sunday, the Payless website was still functioning for browsing, but customers can no longer place online orders.

Needless to say, shoe fans everywhere were devastated to learn that they have to say goodbye. "My kids won’t ever know what Payless is, wow," one person wrote on Twitter. "Payless is going out of business. I hate 2019," said another.

Many were also quick to note that they have already taken advantage of the liquidation sales, which began Sunday. Of course, it's different at every location, but right now, the most popular deal is 20% off your purchase. That percentage is likely to increase as the stores enter their final weeks.

Payless isn't the only company to go through this, of course. People were seriously emotional after learning that the beloved toy store Toys R Us closed for good in 2018. Sears and Kmart have also struggled financially, and have been forced to close many locations. The fate of those two stores remains unclear.
