Donald Trump has tweeted that Iran would "suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before" if its president, Hassan Rouhani, were ever - EVER - to repeat his claim that war with Iran would be "the mother of all wars".

Even by Trump's standards, the tweet's quite something.

As Twitter has been banned in Iran since 2009 and Trump neglected to @ the Iranian president, this is probably the largest scale subtweet in the site's history. However, even as the enticing prospect of a gruelling Middle Eastern war (or a conveniently manufactured distraction from Paul Manafort's trial this week, depending on your ratio of cynicism to terror) rears again, Twitter's first reaction was to parody the tweet.

Trump was reacting to comments Rouhani made yesterday. "America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars," Rouhani said. The state news agency IRNA reported Rouhani as saying: "Mr Trump, don’t play with the lion’s tail, this would only lead to regret."

Relations with Iran have been particularly strained since the Trump administration's decision to pull out of the Obama-era deal on Iran's nuclear development programme, which lifted international sanctions in return for co-operation. Washington, however, pulled out in May and is reapplying sanctions.
