“Star Wars” might have just introduced their first gay couple with “Rogue One” and it’s about time
There’s one relationship that stands out above the rest and Rogue One, and no, it’s not Cassian Ando and his sassy droid, K-2SO (though, they are an adorable pair). Instead, Rogue One’s best couple goes to Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus and while the movie successfully sets up that these two have been together for a long time, and are ridiculously close, is there actually something more there to Chirrut and Baze’s relationship? Possibly.
Rogue One‘s director, Gareth Edwards, has been very vocal about “representing the world,” meaning characters from all different backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders (shoutout to those lady X-Wing pilots!). With that being said, it makes complete sense for Star Wars to, finally, feature a gay couple. And it sure does appear as if Chirrut and Baze are that couple.
All we know about their backstory is that they’ve been together for what is implied a very long time, and care deeply about each other (though we don’t know exactly how they met, both are former Guardians of the Whills, aka, the ~keepers of the Force~). The two make comments about how one would be lost without the other. When (and SPOILER in case you’ve gotten this far and haven’t actually seen Rogue One) Chirrut is killed, Baze is visibly heartbroken, and rushes to his friend’s side. Chirrut reaches for Baze’s face, and instead finds his hand, and this is the last moment together for these two. Hold on, that’s just us weeping.
We know what we see on the screen. But, are they truly more than friends?
“I don’t mind people reading into [Chirrut and Baze’s relationship],” Edwards explained to Yahoo Movies. “I think that’s all good. Who knows? You’d have to speak to them.”
While that is very much a non-answer — and neither Donnie Yen or and Jiang Wen has commented directly on their on-screen chemistry — it sounds like we’re allowed to interpret their relationship as we want. If you think they’re just friends, then you can think that!
But if you want to think they’re more than that and Star Wars just brought a whole lot of awesome diversity to the Force, then go ahead. Rogue One diversity FTW.
