Tractor-trailer engulfed in flames in Frederick County, major delays on I-270

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A tractor trailer fire on southbound I-270 shut down all lanes in Frederick County on Wednesday morning.

Just before 6 a.m., Frederick County Fire and Rescue said the tractor trailer was fully involved on I-270 southbound, about a mile before Doctor Perry Rd. All southbound lanes, as well as the fast lane and shoulder of I-270 northbound, were closed.

Maryland State Police (MSP) said the tractor trailer was traveling south when a car pulled up next to it and motioned that it was on fire. The driver of the tractor-trailer pulled over to the shoulder and it became fully engulfed in flames.

Officials said the driver was able to get out of the vehicle and no injuries were reported.

Hazmat crews were requested, but investigators do not believe any hazardous materials were on board the tractor trailer.

Commuters were encouraged to use I-355 as an alternate route and to expect heavy delays.

As of 7:10 a.m., the bulk of the fire had been knocked out and crews were working on putting out hotspots.

All northbound lanes were open by 7:15 a.m.
