At Least 3 Killed by Wildfires in Russia's Kurgan Region

At least three people were killed in wildfires in Russia’s Kurgan region on Sunday, May 7, according to local authorities, who said that figure could rise.

Following a visit to the region on Monday, Russia’s Minister of Emergency Situations, Alexander Kurenkov, said that most of the fires had been contained.

According to Russia’s Forestry Agency, 176 fires were extinguished, across 31,343 hectares.

Vadim Shumkov, governor of Kurgan Oblast, told reporters that those who lost property in the fires would receive payments of up to 50,000 rubles ($650).
