Her stirring Golden Globes speech might have brought the nation to tears, though, sadly, Oprah will probably never run for president. But that doesn’t mean she’s giving up on being a fearless cultural leader anytime soon. Oprah, who turns 64 today, has taught us too many life lessons to count; she’s helped us to become better readers, coached us through difficult emotions, and shown us how to embrace the joy of giving back—not to mention the thrill of the free giveaway (Pontiacs and key lime pie for everyone!). An annual government report offered a glimmer of good news for Social Security and a jolt of good news for Medicare even as both programs continue to be on pace to run dry next decade.
