Meghan McCain grills 2020 presidential candidate Julián Castro: 'You have no foreign policy experience whatsoever'

On Friday’s The View, 2020 presidential candidate Julián Castro was questioned by host Meghan McCain about his lack of experience, something she said was a main criticism of Donald Trump when he ran for president.

“You have no foreign policy experience whatsoever. You also said vehemently you were not going to run for president. I didn’t understand when you announced why you didn’t want to run for Senate or possibly for governor,” McCain began. “You’re an up and coming rising Democratic star — the cynical side of me thinks maybe you’re doing this because it will get you a lot of national attention. Why not start with the Senate and move forward to presidency?”

Castro’s response was simple and something he repeated a few times throughout the interview: that he has “a vision for the future of the country.” And he laid out the vision earlier in the segment.

“What we need to aim for is to be the smartest, the healthiest, the fairest and the most prosperous nation on earth,” Castro said. “And I’m going to do the hard work of making my pitch.”

Castro, a former Mayor of San Antonio and a former secretary of Housing and Urban Development, announced his candidacy last Saturday in San Antonio. His first campaign stop was Puerto Rico, where he says President Trump has “failed the people.”

Castro, who is campaigning on a platform of tuition-free public college and medicare for all, adds that perceived failure by Trump in Puerto Rico to a list of reasons why he thinks he can and should beat Trump in 2020.

“I don’t think that we’ve ever had a president that was so bad about being able to put the country first. He puts his ego first, whether it’s building the wall or not giving Puerto Rico any money,” Castro said. “We need a change in leadership, and that’s why I’m running for president.”

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on ABC.
