Cardi B is called 'dump trash' for comments about the Holocaust

The internet can do without Cardi B talking about the Holocaust.

A quote from the rapper’s new interview with W magazine has people fired up at her — and the publication. The entertainer (real name: Belcalis Almánzar) is being criticized for even bringing up the genocide, and the mag is being panned for posting just that quote from her full interview — which touched on topics ranging from her romance with Offset to the plastic surgery she’s had — seemingly in hopes of igniting a fury.

In the interview, Cardi talked about being enrolled at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where she took courses in political science and history. While she later dropped out to pursue a stripping career, she said she kept up with the subjects by watching the news and documentaries. “For some reason, I’m really fascinated with the Holocaust,” she said. “People were so naive back then to believe certain things. But then, we in 2018, and there’s people that believe that our problems come from a certain group of people. It just baffles my mind.”

That quote was featured with a glamour shot of the rapper on the magazine’s Instagram page, leading to immediate criticism of the star, who has had her fair share of bad press recently — this, her arrest for a strip club brawl, and her fight with Nicki Minaj at New York Fashion Week. “Okay, queen of history class,” one commenter wrote dismissively. Added another: “Huh? Sad. This literally makes no sense I’m sure this was written verbatim too.” And yet another said: “To be ‘fascinated’ with one of the saddest and terrible part of the WWII is just ignorant. Finally she reached rock bottom.” Many other comments were along the same lines — and some were even ruder: “Dumb ugly convict” and “dump trash.”

Some fans tried to explain what Cardi meant. “Basically she feels history is slowly repeating itself. Hitler then, Trump now,” wrote one. With another person agreeing, “EXACTLY!!! Hitler/Jews Trump/Mexicans.” There was even more in-depth analysis, including, “She is saying that in this day and age, there are actual people that believe issues in the world come from and stem from a race (group of people). just because they are that race. It baffles her that ppl still believe race has anything to do with what makes a person evil.”

Cardi wasn’t the only topic of criticism; there was a lot of finger-wagging at the magazine too. One person asked the magazine to “reconsider this cherry-picked, offensively vague, and contextually irrelevant quote for a new caption to this photo.” Another message directed at the mag was: “Way to disgrace The Holocaust with this vague and irrelevant quote.”

The rapper didn’t seem bothered by the controversy, sharing the cover and writing: “I love it.”
