From the sky, the Ukrainian drone unit commander had a bird’s-eye view of Russia’s renewed offensive playing out in the country’s war-ravaged northeast. Enemy forces have captured a string of Ukrainian villages over the past few days after opening a new front along the border with the Russian region of Belgorod. In the coming days, the U.S. military in the eastern Mediterranean is expected to jab one end of a hulking metal dock — the length of four U.S. football fields — into a beach in northern Gaza. Firefighters in western Canada are battling the first major wildfires of 2024, which sparked into life after unseasonably warm temperatures and an ongoing drought left forests tinder-dry. Provincial wildfire agencies also recorded scores of so-called "zombie fires" that ignited last summer and smoldered throughout the winter.
A Massachusetts Air National Guard member who pleaded guilty in March to federal crimes for leaking highly classified military documents appeared Tuesday before a military hearing officer who will recommend whether the guardsman should face a court-martial. Jack Teixeira, of North Dighton, Massachusetts, is facing three charges in the military justice system: one alleging he failed to obey a lawful order and two counts of obstructing justice. Capt. Stephanie Evans said at Tuesday's hearing that a court-martial was appropriate given that obeying orders “is at the absolute core of everything we do in the U.S. military” and that Texeira acted with “malicious intent to cover his tracks.”
More people are being told to leave an area of western Canada at threat from a nearby wildfire that has grown significantly in the past day.
