UK to increase military aid to Ukraine this winter

“Winter is approaching and that is an important challenge for both sides,” Wallace said.

“So we’re determined ... to give Ukrainian soldiers the best basic skills because we already know that the Russian military aren’t doing that.”

He added that recent Ukrainian battlefield victories show that the West ought to continue to provide Kyiv with military aid.

“Ukraine is still making gains in the east of the country, and slowly but surely closing in on Kherson in the south; that’s a tough fight,” said the minister.

The UK has been in the forefront of international support for Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion, providing both military and economic assistance to the country, and training thousands of Ukrainian soldiers on its shores.

Former PM Boris Johnson visited Kyiv on three occasions since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Recent media reports suggested a visit to Kyiv by UK PM Rishi Sunak is in the works.
