Justin Herbert NFL Draft Prospect Profile

Yahoo Sports’ lead draft analyst Eric Edholm shares his evaluation of the big-armed quarterback out of Oregon.

Video Transcript

ERIC EDHOLM: Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert has been on the national spotlight since 2017, his breakout year. Now it's time to take a look at his pros and cons as a draft prospect.

On the upside, he's got special arm talent with size and athletic ability to match. Also has 42 game tapes for NFL evaluators to really dig into and see a lot of special ability. Doesn't make a lot of bad mistakes too, so he'll work well with risk-averse coaches in the NFL.

On the downside, you wish there were more special throws. He looked a little too risk averse at times, and he might not ever be a special NFL passer.

My NFL comp for Herbert, Ryan Tannehill. Style-wise very similar, but perhaps Herbert is a little more advanced coming out of college. At the combine, Yahoo Sports asked Herbert who the NFL quarterback is he most tries to model his game after.

JUSTIN HERBERT: We watch a lot of Matt Ryan film in college. So a lot of the stuff he does on play action and a lot of his footwork we try to emulate. I would say maybe him. I really look up to him.
