Pembroke's Sammy Davis returns to Boston Pride women's pro hockey team

Sammy Davis of Pembroke is going for a hat trick.

The former Boston University forward has re-signed with the Boston Pride women's pro hockey team, which will be aiming for a third straight league championship this season in the Premier Hockey Federation.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 25-year-old Pembroke native was selected first overall by Boston in the 2020 draft. During her 2021 rookie season, Davis scored four goals and one assist in seven regular-season games played in Lake Placid, and was a finalist for the league’s Newcomer of the Year award. This past season she tallied 12 points, five goals and seven assists, in 20 games, and earned a selection to the 2022 All-Star Showcase. Over the course of her sophomore campaign she produced two three-game point-streaks including one to close out the regular-season schedule. Davis is a two-time Isobel Cup Champion, helping the Pride win both the 2021 and 2022 titles.

“I’m so excited to return to Boston for my third season,” said Davis. “What ultimately influenced my decision to return was the strong team that Boston is building. I love this city and I’m so excited to play for another year. I can’t wait to get started!”

Davis competed in collegiate hockey at Boston University over a five-year period from 2015-20, as she had to red-shirt her junior year due to injury. She served as an alternate captain for the Terriers during the 2017-18 season and as a captain during both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. In four seasons played, Davis totaled 142 points in 147 games which ranks sixth all-time in the program’s history. Her collegiate accolades include unanimous selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team as a freshman in 2015-16, as well as a runner up for Hockey East Rookie of the Year. In the 2018-19 season, Davis erupted for a career-high 52 points in 37 games with a +38 plus/minus rating and was selected as a Hockey East Second Team All-Star. She would claim Hockey East First Team All-Star honors in 2019-20. In February, Davis was inducted into the Women’s Beanpot Hall of Fame, recognizing her achievements at the esteemed event that includes scoring the overtime winner in 2019 for BU’s first Beanpot title since 1981.

On the international stage, Davis was a member of Team USA and served as an assistant captain at the 2018 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship. She scored three points in five games to help the team capture gold.

"Sammy just loves the game. She is dedicated to doing the work required to compete and excel at the highest level," said Pride president Colleen Coyne. "She brings that energy and focus every time she hits the ice, and we are excited to see the impact she will have in her third season of professional hockey!"

Davis is Boston’s 12th signing of the offseason, as the team continues to build its roster. She joins returnees McKenna Brand, Meghara McManus (of Milton), Lauren Kelly, Christina Putigna, Taylor Wenczkowski and Kali Flanagan, as well as free agents Allie Thunstrom and Aneta Tejralová, and collegiate newcomers Becca Gilmore, Élizabeth Giguère and Corinne Schroeder.

Contacted by The Patriot Ledger, star defenseman Kaleigh Fratkin said she also will be returning to the Pride. Fratkin has coached the Weymouth High girls hockey team for the past two seasons. Danielle Larouco, of Rockland, will not return as the Pride general manager. Former Becker College (Worcester) goalie Maddie Rigsby is the new GM.

Last month the Premier Hockey Federation announced it was expanding for the 2022-23 season by adding a franchise in Montreal. That team, which has yet to announce a name and logo, will be joined by the Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps and Toronto Six.
