Pastor column: Plugging into the power of God today

Rev. J. Patrick Street

I marvel at the power of the early church in Acts. Think about it — 3,000 souls were saved one day and 5,000 on another day. The church was marked by powerful miracles and amazing growth. The believers were all filled with the Holy Spirit … they were plugged into the power of God.

The early church was plugged into God’s power that enabled them to “turn the world upside down.” That same power is available to the church today. We need to get plugged in!

Prayer is the secret to the power of God! Acts 4:31 says, “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” Now after the disciples met with the Sanhedrin, the whole assembly gathered and prayed together, in one mind, the Spirit of God moved upon them and filled them with His presence and power. God honored the prayers of His people when they came together as one.

We learn to pray by praying. We learn to pray by asking God for the impossible and believing that He will send it to us. We learn to pray by reading the Word of God and praying it back to Him in faith. Plugging into the power of prayer would do more for this church that 10,000 revival meetings!

Love is the secret to the power of God! In the early church, “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had” (vs. 32). Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). We must plug into the power of God’s love; without His love, everything we do is in vain, (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). To be effective today, we need to plug into the power of a genuine, all-consuming love for others.

Proclaiming the Gospel is the secret to the power of God! The early church was marked by prayer and love; they were also marked by the proclamation of the Gospel. They proclaimed the Gospel to a world that desperately needed that message. Verse 33 tells us, “With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all.”

There’s a world that needs to hear the message of salvation … about Jesus and what He has done for them! The proclamation of the Gospel message is essential (Romans 10:13-17). When God’s people plug in to prayer and a passion for others, we can count on Him to empower His message to the salvation of souls.

The early church stuck to the basics and God blessed them, working through them in a demonstration of divine power. That same power is available to us today … we need to get plugged in and shake our world for Jesus!
