Manitowoc County has 26% voter turnout; over two-thirds voted in the Republican primaries. Here's what to know about the county's results.

MANITOWOC - Manitowoc County had 26% of eligible voters turn out for Tuesday's primary election — and 11,338 of those voters voted in the Republican governor primary.

According to the unofficial results from the Manitowoc County Clerk's Office, Manitowoc voters who voted in the Republican governor primary sided mostly with candidate Tim Michels, giving him 5,120 votes. Rebecca Kleefisch came in second with 4,744 votes.

Statewide, Michels won the Republican primary with 47% of the votes and will be moving on to challenge Gov. Tony Evers in the November elections.

For the lieutenant governor primaries, 9,959 Manitowoc County voters chose Republican while 4,434 chose Democratic.

RESULTS: 2022 Wisconsin Election Primary

For the Republican race, county voters overwhelmingly chose candidate Roger Roth with 4,249 votes. Democratic voters in the county chose Sara Rodriguez with 3,336 votes. Those candidates won their primaries and will meet in November.

Of the 10,946 county voters that chose the Republican ballot, 9,209 voted for incumbent Ron Johnson over David Schroeder for U.S. senator.

In the Democratic primary for the same race, 3,476 voted for Mandela Barnes. The only other candidate to get over 500 votes from county voters was Alex Lasry with 603 votes. Three candidates — Lasry, Sarah Godlewski and Tom Nelson — dropped out of the race before the primary, but their names were still on the ballot.

Statewide, Johnson received 84% of Republican votes in the primary, and Barnes received 78% of Democratic votes.

For U.S. representative in the 6th Congressional District, incumbent Glenn Grothman received 8,961 votes from Republican voters in Manitowoc County, while challenger Doug Mullenix received 1,529. Statewide, Grothman received 83% of the votes in his primary and will be unopposed in November's midterm.

The only other contested primary for Manitowoc County voters was the Republican race for state senator of the 9th District. County voters gave Devin LeMahieu 5,426 votes, Jeanette Deschene 1,198 votes and Ruth Villareal 935 votes.

LeMahieu ultimately won the primary with 72% of statewide votes and will also be unopposed in November.

November's ballot

The midterm election will take place Nov. 8 with several contested races statewide. In addition to the statewide races, Manitowoc County voters can expect to see a contested race for county clerk of circuit court with incumbent Lynn Zigmunt running as a Democrat and challenger April Higgins running as a Republican.

Sheriff Dan Hartwig is running unopposed for his second term and Coroner Curt Green is running unopposed for his fourth term.

Voters in the city of Two Rivers will also see a referendum from the Two Rivers School District for $38.7 million to expand L.B. Clarke Middle School and update safety and technology needs throughout the district.

Registered voters can request an absentee ballot for the November midterm at any time until the election. In-person absentee voting will start at participating local municipal offices Oct. 25.

To register to vote, people will need to provide proof of residence with a utility bill, bank statement, driver's license, etc.
