Heating costs expected to increase significantly as predictions point to colder winter

Regardless of how you heat your home, your monthly heating bills are expected to be more expensive this winter.

According to the state, household heating costs this year are projected to be higher than last winter for all heating fuel sources.

The cost of heating is expected to be 28.6% higher for homes that use natural gas, 18.6% higher for heating oil, 3% higher for propane and 54.6% higher for electric heating.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center is projecting that this upcoming winter will be 3.1% colder than last year.

Meanwhile, National Grid’s new electric rates took effect Tuesday. Its rate increased by 64% for a typical customer, which translates to a monthly bill increase of about $100 for many customers.

According to National Grid, the rate increase is necessary due to the rising price of natural gas thanks to global conflict, inflation and high demand.

Customers who use Eversource to heat their homes will see new rates go into effect on January 1, 2023.

Eversource is expected to file its proposed electric rate changes with the Department of Public Utilities sometime in mid-November.
