Excessive heat watch warning issued in Monterey County as high temps soar to 105

The National Weather Service in the San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey region has issued an excessive heat watch for the mountains of San Benito County and interior Monterey County, including Pinnacles National Monument, through Tuesday night.

Very hot afternoon temperatures of up to 100 to 105F are possible, NWS said.

Forecasters warned Tuesday that a large swath of California’s interior will experience dangerously high temperatures.

The heat spell will largely impact the Central Valley but will also extend out to interior portions of the north and east San Francisco Bay regions and to the coast south of Monterey Bay, the National Weather Service said.

“The forecast will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” the weather service said in a statement.

Extreme heat precautions

To stay safe, people are advised to avoid the sun, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, decrease physical activity, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and check up on relatives and neighbors at risk of heat-related health concerns. For those with pets, keep them indoors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Elsewhere, high temperatures were predicted to range from 104 to 108 degrees (40-42 Celsius) in the San Joaquin Valley.

The heat will be caused by a ridge of high pressure centered over Nevada that is building westward toward the coast.

A heat advisory was also issued for valleys in Southern California’s inland region.
