Foxconn reports sharp rise in first-quarter net profit
Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn on Tuesday reported a 72 percent jump in net profit during the first three months of 2024 compared to the same period last year as demand for investment in AI technology grows.In November, Foxconn said it was planning to invest an additional US$1.54 billion investment in India for "operational needs", after announcing the purchase of a huge tract of land on the outskirts of tech hub Bengaluru last year. dhc/sn

Uber to buy Delivery Hero's Foodpanda in Taiwan for US$950 mn
Ride-hailing giant Uber said Tuesday it has reached a deal with Delivery Hero SE to buy its Foodpanda delivery business in Taiwan for US$950 million. Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination on Tuesday to run for a third term in India’s general election in the northern city of Varanasi. Modi hopes to retain his seat in the holy Hindu city, his constituency, from where he ran and won, first in 2014 and then again in 2019. India’s gigantic, six-week long general election began in April, with voting set to go on until June 1 before votes are counted on June 4.

Verdict expected for German far-right politician Björn Höcke, accused of using Nazi slogan
A court is expected to deliver its verdict Tuesday in the trial of one of the best-known figures in the far-right Alternative for Germany party, who is accused of knowingly using a Nazi slogan in a speech. Björn Höcke went on trial at the state court in the eastern city of Halle in mid-April, months before an election in the state of Thuringia in which he plans to run for governor. Höcke is accused of ending a speech in nearby Merseburg in May 2021 with the words “Everything for Germany!” Prosecutors contend he was aware of the origin of the phrase as a slogan of the Nazis’ SA stormtroopers, but Höcke has argued that it is an “everyday saying.”

Australian weather bureau sees 50% chance of La Nina this year
There are early signs that a La Nina weather event may form in the Pacific Ocean later this year, Australia's weather bureau said on Tuesday. A La Nina would have significant consequences for global agriculture because it typically brings wetter weather to eastern Australia and southeast Asia and drier conditions to the Americas. The bureau said it had declared a "La Nina Watch".

Protesters call off march in Pakistan's Kashmir after demands met
An alliance of civil rights group on Tuesday called off a protest march in Pakistan-ruled Kashmir after several days of clashes over high prices in which four people have been killed and over 100 injured, officials said. Protesters called off the march a day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a grant of 24 billion rupees ($86 million) to help meet most of their demands, which included subsidies on flour and electricity prices. The alliance's head, Shaukat Nawaz Mir, announced the decision in Muzaffarabad, the capital city of the scenic Himalayan region.

TAIPEI (Reuters) -Apple supplier Foxconn reported a 72% rise in first-quarter profit, boosted by strong demand for AI servers and coming off a low base from the period a year earlier, but the growth was lower than expected. The Taiwanese company, the world's largest contract electronics maker, said net profit for the January-March quarter rose to T$22.01 billion ($679 million) from T$12.8 billion in the same period the previous year, when earnings were hit by a T$17.3 billion writedown related to its 34% stake in Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp. While the profit missed the T$29.31 billion forecast by analysts, it was Foxconn's third consecutive quarterly profit rise.

An Australian judge sentenced a former army lawyer to almost six years in prison on Tuesday for leaking to the media classified information that exposed allegations of Australian war crimes in Afghanistan. David McBride, 60, was sentenced in a court in the capital, Canberra, to five years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to three charges including theft and sharing with members of the press documents classified as secret. Justice David Mossop ordered McBride to serve 27 months in prison before he can be considered for release on parole.

Bayer's first-quarter adjusted profit falls less than expected
FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Bayer beat first-quarter analyst forecasts as it reported a slight drop in adjusted earnings on Tuesday, providing a respite for the CEO's turnaround efforts. The company's quarterly earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA), adjusted for one-off items, slipped 1.3% to 4.41 billion euros ($4.76 billion), above an average analyst estimate of 4.15 billion euros posted on the company's website. "The Pharmaceuticals Division saw gains in growth and profitability, and the Crop Science Division outperformed in a difficult market," Bayer said in a statement.
