Australia criticizes China over 'unsafe' aerial confrontation over Yellow Sea
A Chinese fighter jet endangered those aboard an Australian military helicopter during an "unsafe" and "unacceptable" confrontation over the Yellow Sea last week, Australia said on Monday. The incident occurred on Saturday, when a Chinese air force J-10 jet dropped flares above and several hundred meters ahead of an Australian MH60R Seahawk helicopter which was on a routine flight in the Yellow Sea as part of an operation to enforce sanctions against North Korea. The helicopter, flying from destroyer HMAS Hobart, took evasive action and dodged the flares, but the possible impact of being hit would have been "significant," Defence Minister Richard Marles said in a statement.

EU to drop rule-of-law proceedings against Poland
The EU said Monday it will drop action started against Poland six years ago over rule-of-law concerns that could have led Warsaw to lose its vote in the bloc's affairs.As a result, the commission said in a statement Monday, it "considers that there is no longer a clear risk of a serious breach of the rule of law in Poland within the meaning of Article 7.1 of the Treaty on European Union".

China should boost number of ICU beds, state agencies say
China should increase the number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds over the next few years as part of its public health measures, several state agencies recommended in a joint statement published on Monday. The world's second most populous country has gradually increased ICU beds over the years, but critics say its health system remains under-resourced and it was severely stretched after authorities abruptly ended national COVID pandemic restrictions in late 2022. China had only 4.37 ICU beds per 100,000 people in 2021, compared with 34.2 in the United States as of 2015, according to a paper by Shanghai's Fudan School of Public Health.

Defence lawyers for Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic, who is serving a life sentence for his role in the bloody 1992-95 war in Bosnia, are seeking his urgent release to Serbia on health grounds. Descriptions of the 82-year-old's medical condition are redacted in the court papers but he has been known to suffer cognitive impairments and was hospitalised at least twice this year. Mladic led Bosnian Serb forces during Bosnia's 1992-95 war, part of the bloody break up of Yugoslavia.

Grayscale Bitcoin Trust's shares jump after first inflow since January
The move marks a major milestone for GBTC, which has seen $17.46 billion in withdrawals since it converted from a trust to an easily tradable ETF in January, due to the higher fees it charges compared with rivals. GBTC saw inflows of $63 million on Friday, according to investment management firm Farside Investors. But its position as the biggest spot bitcoin ETF by AUM has come under threat from BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, which manages $16.91 billion, according to its website.
