CIF-SS playoffs: Palm Desert tennis picks up opening-round win

The old adage is that when the postseason begins, your regular-season record doesn't matter because everyone starts with a clean slate.

Well the Palm Desert boys' tennis team probably didn't want to erase its regular season, which was a spotless 17-0 record in head-to-head matches.

However, the Aztecs improved to 1-0 in the postseason on Wednesday, winning their CIF-SS Division 1 first-round match against Canyon (Anaheim) 12-6 at home on the red courts of Palm Desert.

No. 1 singles player Eduardo Gonzalez, who last week won the Desert Empire League individual title, swept all three of his sets. Kenan Rizvanbegovic won twice, as did Bhargav Jakkaraju.

In doubles, the top team of Dilen Kakar and Jake Presser, also DEL champs, won all three matches. Simon Frary and Tei Park combined to win twice and that was all the Aztecs needed for a 12-6 win.
