Adaway signs Exhibit 10 contract with Spurs

Sep. 1—Former Logansport and St. Bonaventure star Jalen Adaway has signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the San Antonio Spurs, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski has reported.

An Exhibit 10 contract is a single-season, minimum-salary NBA deal that allows the franchise to convert the contract to a two-way deal as long as that change is made prior to the beginning of the regular season. Each NBA team is limited to six active contracts that contain Exhibit 10 at any given time.

Adaway will likely start the season with the Spurs' G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs. Adaway said he doesn't yet have a spot on the Spurs' NBA training camp roster.

"In some situations [the Exhibit 10 contract] will come with a training camp invite. But because this happened late, the Spurs already had their training camp roster set with all the new guys that they drafted this year and stuff like that. I don't have a training camp spot as of right now," Adaway said. "Things could change but as of right now I don't have it. I'll probably get out there in a couple weeks just to get acclimated and play with a lot of the actual guys on the roster. Hopefully that goes well and maybe they can make a change or something like that and try to get me into training camp."

Adaway has a goal of eventually reaching the NBA. He's planning on starting next season in Austin.

"Being on an Exhibit 10, that's basically saying you are going to be one of the main guys, go-to guys on the G League team. But the team does have the rights to convert your contract to a two-way contract before the actual season starts," he said. "In my situation if I were to go to training camp being on the Exhibit 10, they could convert my contract being on a two-way contract before the season starts if that were the case.

"I'd say right now it's looking like starting in Austin. I definitely see myself starting there. I'm sure I'm going to be surrounded by a lot of good teammates there playing for an organization like San Antonio. I know it trickles down from top to bottom. So I'm definitely going to start the season in Austin I'm assuming and then kind of go from there."

Adaway said he's currently living in Indianapolis and plans to head out to Texas in a couple weeks.

"I'll probably be out there for about a week, week and a half, two weeks, something like that, kind of just practice, scrimmage, play pickup. By that time all the guys should be back, all the guys on the official roster and the other Exhibit 10s, so I'm definitely looking forward to that," he said.

Adaway played for the Miami Heat's Summer League team this year in California and Las Vegas.

"It was definitely a good experience. I'm very thankful for it. I'll always thank the Miami organization for taking that chance with me and giving me the opportunity," he said. "In terms of playing time and stuff like that, I wouldn't say it fell in my favor this year. That's kind of unfortunate but at the same time I took a lot away from it. I know moving forward especially with next summer playing Summer League, I kind of have a feel for it now. I kind of know what to expect in certain ways. But I think it's going to be a lot more productive in terms of me and my game on the court."

The Summer League consists of both lottery picks and veteran professional players. Adaway is an undrafted rookie looking to work his way up.

"Some of these Summer League teams have got guys that have been in the league a few years," he said. "On the Miami team a couple of the guys they had were guys that have been in the G League for a little while, played overseas for a few years, been in the NBA. There was one guy on our team who played for the Warriors for two or three years, something like that, so it's definitely the real deal."

Adaway's goal is to play in the NBA.

"My dream has always been to play at the highest level possible and that being the NBA. I know it's something that can happen and just the last couple years what I've done in terms of my overall growth both on and off the court, I think that it's a goal that's going to be soon accomplished, whether it's midseason I get called up or next year, I know that I can play at this level. Just going up against some of these guys in Summer League, getting some of these open private runs and stuff like that, I know that I'm capable, I know that I have it in me. I've shown it, not necessarily to the world yet, but I know that it's something that'll happen in due time."
