Billionaire urges Russian firms to build alternative to SAP software
Billionaire Alexey Mordashov has proposed creating a Russian consortium to invest billions in developing an alternative to the widely-used business software made by Germany's SAP, which curtailed its operations in Russia over the Ukraine conflict. SAP announced plans to exit Russia in April 2022 and allowed maintenance contracts with customers to expire at the end of 2023 as it gradually withdrew in opposition to Moscow despatching troops to Ukraine in February 2022. Finding an alternative to SAP, whose software helps businesses manage functions from marketing and human resources to logistics and procurement, is crucial for Russia as it seeks to develop without access to many Western technologies.

The landmark trial of three former Syrian intelligence officials began Tuesday at a Paris court for the alleged torture and killing of a French-Syrian father and son who were arrested over a decade ago, during the height of Arab Spring-inspired anti-government protests. International warrants have been issued for the defendants, being tried in absentia. The father Mazen Dabbagh and his son, Patrick, were arrested in the Syrian capital, Damascus, in 2013, following a crackdown on demonstrations that later turned into a brutal civil war, now in its 14th year.

Chinese fossil reveals evolution of skin in feathered dinosaurs
A new fossil of the Cretaceous Period dinosaur Psittacosaurus, a dog-sized herbivore with a parrot-like beak, that was donated to a Chinese university came with a surprise - one revealed only after scientists viewed it under ultraviolet light. It retained large patches of beautifully preserved skin, down to its cellular structure, providing new insight into skin evolution in feathered dinosaurs. The fossil points to "zoned development" in the skin of these dinosaurs, researchers said, with Psittacosaurus and probably other feathered dinosaurs possessing scaly, reptile-like skin on body regions without feathers, with soft, bird-like skin on areas with feathers.

American Airlines must face pilots' lawsuit over paid military leave
A federal appeals court on Tuesday revived a lawsuit by American Airlines pilots over the carrier's failure to pay them for short-term military leave. In a 3-0 decision, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia said a reasonable jury could find short-term military leave comparable to jury duty leave or bereavement leave, for both of which American pays pilots. The court revived a class action by pilots who took short-term military leave, defined as 16 or fewer days, from January 2013 to October 2021.
