10 things you can do over Memorial Day Weekend in Dutchess, Orange counties

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Nope, it’s not ‘that’ time, but it is getting warmer and Memorial Day weekend beckons. That means outdoor fun in the Hudson Valley with the family. Not sure what to do?

We’ve compiled 10 things to choose from, including hunting for fairy houses, catching a ball game or a truck show, and catching a wave at water park.

1. Fairy House Hunt: There’s a unique treasure hunt happening at Locust Grove Estate in Poughkeepsie this weekend. It’s a Fairy House Hunt! You’ll get a map and instructions and you’ll keep your eyes peeled for 30 fairy houses hidden on an enchanted walk. The event is for all ages and, no matter how old you are, you should dress up for the occasion in costumes and fairy wings. The Hunt takes place on Saturdays and Sundays until June 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Purchase  tickets early for May 28 and May 29, $10 per person, and kids 4 and under are free. 2. Hit the Walkway at Night: Enjoy your all-you-can-eat barbecue during the day and then head on over to the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie for a nice post-BBQ walk.  Walkway Over the Hudson at Night Gives the most spectacular view of the Hudson River and will be held on May 27, from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Everyone, including children, must have a ticket for entry. 3. Take Me Out to the Ballgame: Better yet, take the whole family and root on the Hudson Valley Renegades, a New York Yankees minor league team, as they play the Rome Braves at home at the Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill this weekend. Choose from the Friday game at 7:05 p.m., Saturday at 6:05 p.m., or Sunday at 2:05 p.m.

If you would rather decide based on their fun promotional days, both Friday and Saturday top off the night with fireworks, and on Sunday you can find out if you'll be placed in Griffithdor, Fluffletuff, Sparrowtalon, or Snakeskinerin at the Witchcraft & Wizardry themed day. 4. Remember: Memorial Day is a tribute to those who have served in the armed forces, so what better place to enjoy the weekend than at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park. On Saturday, May 28th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., history will come to life on the Great Lawn as it takes on the appearance of a World War II encampment. See WWII military displays and period military vehicles of all sizes, while soldiers in battle dress are on hand to share their love of World War II history. The event is free. Franklin D. 5. Shop Till You Drop: It’s baaaaccckkkk! Put on some good walking shoes and take them to the Stormville Airport Flea Market, which will be held on May 28 and 29, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission for everyone of all ages; Stormville Airport Antique Show & Flea Market 428 Route 216, Stormville, stormvilleairportfleamarket.com.

6. Park It: The Hudson Valley is home to many, many parks that are great places to spread a blanket and enjoy a Memorial Day picnic. Try Fahnestock State Park, the 14,086-acre park in Putnam and Dutchess that has hiking trails, picnic areas, and a scenic campground. 7. Rev up the Fun! Over Memorial Day weekend, the Orange County Fair Speedway hosts the Triple Threat Truck Fest, three days of family-friendly fun! Enjoy truck pulls, fireworks, concerts, bonfires, food, pig roasts and more. Single-day passes are $25. Kids 12 and under are free with an accompanied adult. 8. Kick it at the Carnival! The Washingtonville Knights of Columbus hosts their annual Memorial Weekend Carnival and nothing says holiday weekend more than carnival rides and deep-fried carnival food. The fun starts on Thursday, May 26, at 6 p.m. and continues Friday, May 27th, from 6 to 10 p.m. There are sensory-friendly hours on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Additional hours are Saturday, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Monday, 3 p.m. to  9 p.m. Daily wristbands for unlimited rides are only $25. 9. Legomania! Rollercoasters, pirate ships, and of course, stacking Legos as high as possible! Those are only a few things that the new Legoland in Goshen offers for fun. It’s open and ready to be enjoyed, so head on over to the Lego website to purchase a one-day ticket (or more!) starting from $67.99 per person. Make a full weekend out of it by booking a Lego-themed hotel room too. 10. Ride some waves: Splashdown Waterpark, known as "America's Biggest Little Water Park," reopens for the Summer 2022 season on Saturday, May 28. The water park's hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 28-30.  From June 4-12, the park is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m; starting June 18, it will be open for daily operation.  16 Old Route 9 W, Fishkill, 845-897-9600.
