'You're the Worst' Creator Explains That Ben Affleck-Jennifer Garner Joke in the Premiere
The tabloids are still mourning the demise of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s marriage… but You’re the Worst saw it coming from a mile away.
On tonight’s Season 2 premiere, the newly separated Lindsay uses the doomed celebrity pair to illustrate her argument to Gretchen against the stultifying effects of monogamy:
(Yes, she said “Gardener.”)
And even more amazing: This episode was written and shot months ago, long before the Affleck-Garner split became public. So Yahoo TV reached out to You’re the Worst creator Stephen Falk to congratulate him on his very prescient joke.
“Jesus Christ, I know! So yeah, we had already shot it,” Falk tells us, “and I had already edited it, actually, when they made this announcement. And I was like, ‘Oh, f–k!’ I think at the time when we wrote that, there were just the beginnings of inklings of rumors of problems. And I kept hoping they weren’t true. Because those kids are pretty cute together.”
But Falk didn’t end up making any changes to the episode, since he realized the breaking news only made the joke funnier: “Going back and watching it, it doesn’t actually ruin anything. Because now there’s definitive proof that their relationship got old and boring and gross.”
You’re the Worst airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on FXX.
