‘American Crime Story’ to Tackle Monica Lewinsky Scandal in Future Season

The People v. O.J. Simpson raked in nothing but viewers, praise, and awards for FX, so all eyes have been on the network and producer Ryan Murphy for answers about the subsequent seasons of American Crime Story. At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, Murphy teased for SuperFan Los Angeles what the follow-up will cover: the U.S. government’s failures in handling the Hurricane Katrina disaster, as well as what happened from a first-person viewpoint, “within that microcosm, we go even more intimate to look at the various crimes that were committed — looting, what happened at Memorial Hospital, what happened at the Superdome,” Murphy divulged. “And we’ve done a lot of additional reporting, and it’s just mind-blowing, you can’t believe that this happened in our country.”

The Katrina season has been delayed until 2018, and is in concurrent production with Season Three, which will dramatize the murder of Gianni Versace and air just six months after Season Two.

Now, the subject of Season Four may have been revealed as the show’s producers have optioned A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, a book that explores the affair President Bill Clinton had with White House intern Monica Lewinsky that rocked headlines in 1997. The best-seller was written by Jeffrey Toobin, who also penned The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, the basis of Season One. The author was heavily involved in the series and worked as a consultant to the writers.

The producers are reportedly already looking at actresses to play Lewinsky and Linda Tripp, her colleague who secretly recorded phone calls that revealed details about the affair.

With the success of American Crime Story, it’s no surprise that almost every network is jumping on the true-crime bandwagon with a Patty Hearst project at CBS, a project based on the podcast Serial at Fox 21, and a Menendez Brothers-focused season of Dick Wolf’s Law & Order: True Crime, just to name a few.
