The Wrap has partnered with Canvs, the emotion analytics company, for a weekly look at some of the characters and personalities that have TV viewers the most worked up on social media. The data below covers Aug. 2-8 and is drawn from the most emotionally reacted-to television shows, including broadcast, cable, streaming and PPV.
Simply put, the season 13 finale of “The Bachelorette” on ABC, which received 121,949 Emotional Reactions (ERs), left viewers reeling. It was revealed early on that despite his declarations of love for Rachel, contestant Peter was not ready to move forward with an engagement. As the whole purpose of this show is for the bachelorette to walk away with a ring at the end, viewers were shocked — and they sent a flurry of messages ranging from outrage to despair, lamenting how good Peter and Rachel seemed to be for each other and how she seemed to be settling for second best with the other finalist, Bryan.

During the NFL preseason football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals (37,103 ERs), Cowboys’ tight end Rico Gathers had viewers talking the most. The 23-year-old athlete (who actually played college basketball, not football), delivered a respectable three receptions plus a touchdown. Although it’s early (as in, the true season hasn’t even kicked off yet), people seem impressed by the showing and some think he has big things in store for the Cowboys.

“Sharknado 5: Global Swarming,” the latest installment of Syfy’s disaster-comedy franchise that went viral when it first appeared in 2013, hit TV screens on Sunday night, generating 20,331 ERs. Of all the characters, shark hunter Nova Clarke (portrayed by Cassie Scerbo) was the most mentioned. Nova had previously appeared in the first and third films in the series, and fans rejoiced at her return. Unfortunately by the end of the movie, Nova, like so many others, had perished.
