‘Westworld’ Recap: Surprise Ending Changes Everything

Sunday night’s episode of Westworld had an ending that many fans saw coming, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t shocking. A lot of people assumed that one or more of the humans might actually be hosts, and those assumptions came true in Sunday’s episode, “Trompe l’Oeil.” Trompe l’oeil is defined as “a painting or design intended to create the illusion of a three-dimensional object,” and for those of you not fluent in French, it translates to “to deceive the eye,” which is appropriate for this episode.

Bernard took Theresa to the cabin where he found Dr. Ford’s unregistered hosts to show her what the doctor has been up to, but what they found was a hidden facility in which new hosts were being made. Theresa was looking through some host blueprints, like the one for Dolores, and that’s when she stumbled upon a blueprint that resembled Bernard. When Theresa asked him about it, Bernard responded with “Doesn’t look like anything to me,” which tipped off Theresa that he was a host. That’s when Dr. Ford appeared behind them and confirmed Theresa’s thoughts by saying, “They cannot see the things that will hurt them.”

After explaining everything to Theresa, Dr. Ford whispered, “And in that sleep, what dreams may come.” Then he prompted Bernard to attack her. The episode ended with Theresa slouched on the floor with blood streaks behind her on the wall. So it looks like Theresa won’t be around anymore — unless, of course, Dr. Ford makes a robot Theresa.

Westworld airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
