‘Walking Dead’ Recap: Ladies Escape, Carol Leaves a Little Soul Behind

On “The Same Boat” episode of The Walking Dead, Maggie and Carol found themselves being held prisoner by some Saviors. The Saviors were led by a woman named Paula, who was a lot like Carol but with even less humanity.

Maggie not only wanted to escape, she wanted to kill all of the Saviors. Surprisingly, Carol didn’t share Maggie’s homicidal desires. In fact, she was downright against killing the Saviors multiple times — although it should be noted that she got over that and killed a couple of them.

Carol ended up killing Paula, which in a way was symbolic of killing an alternate version of herself, hence the title “The Same Boat.” And it was hard on Carol, who needed a reassuring hug from Daryl after she escaped.

It was a pretty fun episode, despite being what is known as a “bottle episode.” Bottle episodes rely on a small cast and primarily one location — like the “Fly” episode of Breaking Bad. This helps reduce cost and stress on production while giving some of the actors a chance to have a more complex story arch. And Carol clearly made things much more complex in her most recent story arch.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
