'Walking Dead' Recap: King Ezekiel and Carol Hit It Off

“The Well,” the most recent episode of The Walking Dead, brought us a new major character, Ezekiel. Ezekiel is the ruler of The Kingdom, a large community of survivors who appear to be thriving.

Ezekiel, a larger-than-life leader, has modeled The Kingdom after a modern Medieval/Feudal community. The members refer to their warriors as “knights,” and the dialogue is occasionally borrowed from Elizabethan English.

While Ezekiel acts like he is from 15th century England, his appearance is much more eclectic; he welcomed Carol to the community while wearing a Hawaiian shirt. But most notable about his appearance is that he always has a live tiger, named Shiva, by his side.

Ezekiel took quite a liking to Carol — in fact, he revealed his origin to her. He used to be a zookeeper who rescued Shiva after she was badly injured. In return, she helped him survive the walkers and ascend to leader of The Kingdom.

There appears to be a little romantic tension between Ezekiel and Carol. Ezekiel repeatedly tried to entice Carol to eat a pomegranate. For those of you who enjoy Greek mythology, you’ll remember that Hades, God of the Underworld, tricked Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, into eating a pomegranate, resulting in Persephone becoming his bride. Maybe there is a little symbolism there?

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on AMC.
