‘Walking Dead’ Recap: Eugene Eats Pickles, Becomes Negan

First and foremost, can we ask a simple question: Of all the CDs to survive the end of the world, why did it have to be “Easy Street”? I’d rather have a Savage Garden cassingle than this obnoxious, royalty-free earworm.

Anyway, on this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, we got another grand tour of the Savior’s adult clubhouse, the Sanctuary, which is about one late-night poetry jam short of an artists’ collective. After being captured a few weeks back, Eugene is finding his sea legs in an ocean of grunge band dropouts.

Meanwhile, Dwight is being put through the wringer for Daryl’s escape, as well as the disappearance of Sherry, Dwight’s ex, who is now one of Negan’s wives. And what better way to intimidate the man than to whisper sweet nothings through a keyhole.

As Dwight’s favor slides, Eugene quickly climbs the ranks with an inventive plan to smelt iron on walkers’ heads to make for nearly invincible defenses. And every good deed is rewarded in kind … with a big jar of pickles and a night with Negan’s wives that is positively gushing with romance.

Dwight tracks down Sherry’s trail to their old home and finds that she did in fact spring Daryl before flying the coop. Dwight takes out his anger on the armoire. Ol’ Melt-Face knows he can’t tell the Bossman that Sherry’s all to blame, so he pins it on that smart-mouthed doctor. Negan reacts by firing him. Literally.

Back at the Sanctuary, the newfound power goes straight to Eugene’s ape-draped head, but before we can call it a night, Negan has to make sure Dr. Smarty-pants is swingin’ for the right team, and Eugene passes the test by avowing, “I’m Negan. I’m utterly, completely, stone-cold Negan. I was Negan before I even met you. I just needed to meet you properly to know. I’m Negan.”

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
