Everyone loves a mascot fight, a meme, and reggae. Right?
At least, Volkswagen hopes so. Their leaked Super Bowl 2013 spot, "Get Happy," features reggae great Jimmy Cliff ("The Harder They Fall") crooning the Partridge Family's theme song while YouTube's most notorious train wrecks do their thing: baseball players disputing calls by throwing bases, a girl sobbing about glitter, that famously inconsolable Packers fan, a portly dude whanging his guitar down on his videogame console, and many other meme stars.
Then a, well, happy reunion occurs, as all these folks (plus one very tolerant orange cat) gather in a sunny field, now all smiles, to sing along with Cliff. Cliff, totally committed to his role, gives hilarious shout-outs like "Supermarket Tantrum Girl!"
At least one tweeter got a warm and fuzzy feeling:
"That's the power of German engineering," the closing chyron tells us, but the power of Volkswagen's ad campaigns can't be disputed either. Their 2011 in-game spot, "The Force" (a.k.a. "the one with Darth Vader Kid"), was a highlight of that year's ad reel -- and VW switched up the Super-Bowl-commercial game for good by leaking that commercial ahead of the Super Sunday broadcast.
Volkswagen followed the Jimmy Cliff teaser, released last week, with another "Get Happy" spot, below. This one features cubicle-farm office workers with a serious case of the Mondays, cheered up by their co-worker, Dave -- a Minnesota native with a Jamaican accent.
Everyone's looking at Dave -- and his exhortations to "turn that frown... the other way around" -- strangely, until taking a ride (and, let's face it, possibly a toke) (not that we condone such things) in his red VW bug at lunch time. Then they're busting out the island accents too. It's kind of silly, but we giggled at "Ja, chill, Webster."
We've loved VW's ads for years, all the way back to the "...that was interesting" spot that synced up everything in a single neighborhood to the Master Cylinder track playing inside the car. Which YouTube freakouts did you recognize? Does Jamaican Dave beat Darth Vader Kid? Get (un-?)happy in the comments!
The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII, which airs Sunday, 2/3 at 6:30 PM on CBS.
