Vine Star Shawn Mendes Talks About Selling Out MSG, New Tattoo on ‘Ellen’

Canadian music sensation Shawn Mendes stopped by Ellen on Tuesday and performed the first single, “Treat You Better,” from his second album, “Illuminate.” Mendes got his start posting videos to Vine and other social media sites, and he soon gained a lot of fans and a record deal in 2014. In the short time since then, Mendes has gotten so popular that he recently sold out Madison Square Garden in New York City. He talked about the upside of catapulting to stardom through the Internet.

“I actually have my life documented from when everything started, so I can go back and look. It’s really nice,” said Mendes.

He also talked to host Ellen DeGeneres about his new tattoo, which happens to be his first. The new ink is on his forearm and is in the shape of a guitar, but it’s made up of images of trees and their reflection in water, with a sound wave acting as the neck of the guitar, which attaches to an outline of the Toronto, Ontario, skyline.

Explaining the meaning of the tattoo, Mendes said, “The sound wave is my parents and my sister saying ‘I love you.’ So it was kind of like a connection between home, work, and family.”
