‘This is Us’ Actress Chrissy Metz on Her Plus-Sized Role: This is a ‘Story That Needs to Be Told’

This is Us” is shocking preview audiences before its debut.

The Dan Fogelman-led show is set to premiere on NBC, according to its cast, extremely raw and real, and for Emmy nominee Sterling K. Brown, his character hits close to home.

“Randall lost his dad and has never known his biological father, and I lost my dad as a young man as well. So he has all these things going on for him in life — beautiful wife, great job, great home. But he doesn’t have his father,” Brown said.

“I found myself in this particular point in time in my life, with all these great things happening to me — wouldn’t it be nice if my dad was here? Wouldn’t it be nice if I could share this with my father?” he added.

The show packs an emotional punch, but Brown believes “This is Us” has a good balance of lightness and darkness making it extremely relatable.

“Our show tends to show the hopefulness of life. Even though it’s a struggle at the end of the day there’s a rainbow at the end of that tunnel,” he said.

The show also caters to the current state of diversity in TV. Chrissy Metz, who plays a plus-sized woman named Kate, was excited to even see an audition for her type of character.

“I was excited with the breakdown! I thought… What? A plus-size actress that is remotely attractive and has a love interest… in Hollywood? I need this!” Metz said during the show’s Paley Center Fall TV Preview panel.

“So many people are defined by a number. If there was going to be a pioneer of the plus-size girl of my shape on TV, why not me? We’re not defined by our weight or what we wear but this is a very poignant story that needs to be told,” she said.

“This is Us” premieres on September 20 at 10 p.m. on NBC.
