Warning: This recap for the “Insurgent” episode of UnREAL contains spoilers.

All’s fair in love and war, but be ready for the consequences of your actions. Rachel makes a move against Quinn this week, only to have it blow up in her face.

In a way, UnREAL is actually a dysfunctional family drama. Chet is the trainwreck dad and Quinn is the sharp-tongued mom. And Rachel is the teenager desperately trying to assert herself as a grown-up.

She had finally achieved her dream of running Everlasting — only to have it snatched away again by her “mom.” So, it’s no surprise that Rachel goes behind Quinn’s back to the network. But her delighted little smile as Gary the network exec announces he’s putting someone new in charge soon fades, because that someone is not her. There’s a whole new boss to contend with, and if Rachel thought dealing with two bosses was bad, juggling three might send her over the edge.

Here’s a rundown of the premiere, including our live tweets:

Bikini battle

Shooting on the premiere of Everlasting is about to commence as the ladies are all in their bikinis. Rachel is spiraling after Quinn took over the set, but Quinn promises again that she’ll give the reins back to Rachel once this whole Chet situation is fixed. “We promised the network suicide ratings and we need to deliver,” she says.

That includes causing a catfight, which means Rachel has to convince Beth Ann to wear her Confederate flag bikini. She questions Beth Ann’s Southern credentials and tells her not to let PC naysayers prevent her from being who she is.

Of course, seeing Beth Ann’s bikini pisses off “blacktivist” Ruby, and Rachel tells Jay to manage her. But Jay is not the devil, like Rachel, and tells Ruby the truth: Darius never asked specifically for her to be cast, and they want her around to lock horns with Beth Ann.

Darius rolls into the mansion with his cousin and several other friends, and this is starting to feel like a Vegas party more than Everlasting.

Chet’s loving it, though, and he declares that he’s going to shoot a version of the premiere his way and Quinn can shoot it her way, and then they can let the network decide. He even gets Jeremy on his side, so Quinn has to promote some random cameraman to be her director of photography.

Meanwhile, Beth Ann is locked in the bathroom, mortified because of her bikini. Her family worships Darius, and she wants him to actually like her. Rachel gently pushes her outside to meet Darius, who’s taken aback by her outfit. But Beth Ann gamely says she’ll just get rid of it — and promptly takes off her top. Darius smiles in approval and gives her his shirt to wear. Quinn is doing backflips, while Chet is annoyed that Jeremy didn’t get the shot of her boobs.

Sweet little Madison is following Rachel around like a puppy. She wants to be just like Rachel! Rachel pushes her off to manage her contestants, when “hot Rachel” aka Yael comes up. Yael tries to be friendly, but mostly it’s because she wants some one-on-one time with Darius. Rachel sarcastically tells her to do whatever Madison says, because Madison is a genius.

Wives and daughters

Next up for some facetime with Darius is Chantal, the pretty black pageant girl. They immediately hit it off, when Darius leans in for a kiss, she rebuffs him. She’s not that kind of girl and doesn’t kiss on first dates. Rachel and Quinn are thrilled that they have a black wifey type, or “blifey.”

As for the white wifey character, Tiffany — well, she’s hanging back. Seems she thinks her father, a football team owner, set this whole thing up for her, because he wants to win Darius over to his team.

Chet zooms in on her and offers some terrible advice: Hook up with one of Darius’s friends, that’ll get his attention. Really, Chet just wants more drama on camera. Tiffany goes off to hook up with his cousin, Romeo, but Quinn and Rachel spot them on a feed. Rachel has to run to prevent anything (much) from happening, and she tells Romeo to keep this to himself or it’ll ruin the season for Darius.

Rachel tries to talk sense into Tiffany and promises that her father had nothing to do with her being cast. Then, she secures some alone time for Tiffany with Darius, and the two hit it off right away. There’s a moment it seems Darius knows about the thing with Romeo, but instead, he reveals he knows who her father is. They talk football, Texas, and barbecue, and Quinn is dancing a jig about getting her wifey.

She also takes complete credit for it, though Rachel sourly notes she found these contestants. Quinn shuts her down by saying she set all of this up for Rachel for years, and that without her, Rachel wouldn’t be anywhere. “It takes an iron spine and steady hand to do this job,” Quinn says. And then she brings up Rachel’s mom and her “episodes.” “You’re great. Until you’re not.”

This totally crushes Rachel, who goes outside to smoke and cry. Jay finds her, and gives her some straight talk: Rachel was never the boss. Quinn isn’t going to truly give up control of the show, ever. And she had better get used to it.

Chet gloats to Quinn about getting footage of Tiffany hooking up with Romeo, and Quinn shoots back that he has no idea how to put on a good show. They need a wifey character and he’s about to destroy that. Just then, someone falls into the pool — it’s Yael — and Darius jumps in to rescue her. Both producers start yelling for their camera guys to get the footage.

Well, turns out Yael was putting on an act — she was on the swim team in college — and tells Madison that you have to be willing to do what it takes to win.

Win, lose, or draw

Chet has already learned that lesson long ago. As Darius changes for the elimination ceremony, he starts hinting at Tiffany’s rendezvous with Romeo. Will Romeo come clean about it?

The elimination ceremony gets underway. Darius predictably gives bracelets to Beth Ann, Chantal, and Yael. A little more unpredictably, he gives one to Ruby, and whispers that he was forced to give one to Beth Ann, but Ruby’s is more genuine.

The last bracelet is up, and Darius still hasn’t chosen Tiffany. Uh oh, did Chet get to him after all? Nope! He gives her the final bracelet, and Chet is stunned.

But where’s Rachel in all of this? She mops up her tears, straightens her hair, and goes to see… Gary the network guy. She tells him about Chet and Quinn’s feud and how it’s ruining the show. She makes her pitch that Gary should put someone in charge who will preserve the show and deliver the ratings he wants.

Back on set, Quinn and Chet are furiously editing their versions of the show.

Gary watches both, then yells at both of them for letting their personal drama endanger the show. Rachel just smiles, waiting for him to announce that he’s put her back in charge. Instead, he introduces them to Coleman, a wunderkind producer who is taking over.

Coleman knows Rachel backstabbed Quinn. “It didn’t work out the way you wanted it to, did it? Instead you got me,” he says. She really can’t believe it. Like, who is this guy? Maybe the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.

“This is going to be fun,” Coleman says. Fun? More like crazy!
