Underwhelmed By ‘Gilmore Girls’ Final Words? So Was the Cast!

Lauren Graham wasn’t exactly ecstatic about the ending of Netflix’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life when she admitted on Today, “I did not know the four words until halfway through filming of this iteration of the series, and I, too, was like, Huh? Really? Huh.”

Not a glowing review, but “Huh? Really? Huh.” has been the response to most big events in 2016. Graham, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Lorelai Gilmore, was joined by castmates Kelly Bishop, Scott Patterson, and Alexis Bledel, via phone, on the set of Today to discuss the new mini-series that returns us to Stars Hollow for four more 90-minute episodes that have been delighting Gilmore Girls and Boys alike. The hot topic for all fans has been the cliffhanger ending. Bishop, who played Gilmore matriarch Emily, echoed Graham’s confusion, “I did ask Alexis. I thought somebody’s got to tell me. I asked her, and my reaction was — huh.”

There were even comparisons to another much beloved series that ended on a strange note, as Graham said, “Someone compared it to the end of The Sopranos which left a little bit of a question if the air. Which was similarly controversial, yet perhaps artistically satisfying. I don’t know.”

Alexis Bledel didn’t get a chance to weigh in on Today, but the previous night, she told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that she was “shocked” when she heard about the ending.

So, underwhelmed, shocked, and “huh?” That’s the casts’ feedback to the final four words of a mini-series nearly a decade in the making. And Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has been planning on ending the series this way since at least April 2006. When Michael Ausiello of TV Guide asked, “If next year is the final year, will you tell me what those last two words were?” She responded, “Yes, I will. I promise you. You’ve got my word… Last four words, actually.” But Sherman-Palladino left Gilmore Girls before the final broadcast season, and her final words weren’t uttered until ten years later.
