Uma Thurman’s ‘Girl Soldier’ Gets Financing Partners

EXCLUSIVE: Imprint Entertainment has just come aboard to help finance Girl Soldier, based on Kathy Cook’s book Stolen Angels: The Kidnapped Girls of Uganda, which awhile back drew the interest of Uma Thurman to star and produce. The move comes after Jojo Ryder and his Untouchable J. Productions joined the producers over last year’s holidays. He, in turn, brought in Imprint to help finance and produce the property. Let’s hear it for another indie film (and great story) getting a chance to see the light of day.

The story of Girl Soldier follows the 1996 raid at a boarding school where a band of armed rebels abducted young girls to turn them into soldiers and sex slaves. A courageous teacher at the school, Sister Caroline, then tracked the rebels back to their camp and demanded the girls’ release. After that, 110 girls were returned to the nun’s care. Later, the nun took an anti-trafficking campaign all the way to the Pope and the UN.

The plan is to shoot the film in South Africa.

Imprint is actually working on a couple other features as well — the animated Groove Tails as well as Walkaway Joe for director John Pogue and producers Charles Gordon, Fred Fontana and the finance company’s Michael Becker. Ryder last produced the indie feature American Heist which starred Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen.

Girl Soldier has been in development for awhile but did not have financing.

Becker will now join Ryder and Thurman on the project as a producer. Other producers are Rick de Oliveira, Brian Bullock and Jeffrey L. Williams. The screenplay was written by Karen Croner, Jonathan Marc Feldman and Stephanie Pinola.

Thurman is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment. Ryder is repped by Paradigm Talent Agency.
