Empire” improved on its series low last week in Nielsen’s preliminary overnight ratings for Wednesday. The episode about a nude photo leak brought in a 3.1 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.37 million viewers. Lead-in “Lethal Weapon” brought in a 1.7 demo rating and 6.61 million viewers.

ABC’s comedy block dipped a little from the previous week, though the network still placed second as a whole to Fox. “The Goldbergs” came in slightly down with a 1.8 in the 18-49 demo and 6.42 million viewers. “Speechless” drew a 1.6 and 5.67 million viewers. “Modern Family” ticked down to a 2.2 and 7.27 million viewers, while “Black-ish” held steady at a 1.6 and 5.56 million. “Designated Survivor” also held steady with a 1.2 and 5.52 million viewers.

On CBS, “Survivor” came in at a 1.8, slightly down, with 8.46 million viewers. “Criminal Minds” ticked up with a 1.4 and 7.56 million viewers. “Code Black” stayed steady with a 0.9 and 5.68 million viewers.

“Blindspot” on NBC brought in a slightly up 1.1 in the demo and 4.98 million viewers. “Chicago P.D.” was on from 9-11 p.m. Wednesday night, averaging a 1.2 in the demo over those two hours and 6.11 million viewers. (The second hour outrated the first, with a 1.3 demo.)

“Arrow” on The CW stayed steady with a 0.7 and 1.88 million viewers. “Frequency,” which will be replaced on the schedule by “The 100” in February, drew a 0.3 and 999,000 viewers. On the plus side for “Frequency,” its entire 18-49 demo rating fell into the similarly coveted 18-34 demographic. (Though for comparison’s sake, “Empire” drew a 2.6 rating in that younger demo.)

As a reminder, most of these shows will see ratings lifts of 50% or more once viewing within three and seven days is counted by Nielsen. However, most of those gains won’t translate to the ratings guarantees networks make to advertisers.
