TV Ratings: ‘Big Bang Theory’ Stays Steady in Thursday Move, ‘Great Indoors’ Debuts Decently

CBS’ spate of Thursday Night Football games is over, and NBC’s five-game TNF package doesn’t start until next week. With this week’s Jags-Titans game no one wanted shunted off to the NFL Network, the Eye bowed new comedy “The Great Indoors” and medical drama “Pure Genius” to mixed results.

“The Big Bang Theory” made its customary relocation back to Thursdays at 8 p.m. with a 3.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.41 million viewers, hovering around the same numbers as its Monday jaunt. Joel McHale’s Gen Y-bashing comedy “The Great Indoors” debuted with a decent 2.0 in the demo and 9.25 million viewers. (Kevin James’ “Kevin Can Wait,” the other comedy that bowed behind “Big Bang” this season, premiered to a 2.6 and 11.08 million viewers, but that was behind the slightly stronger “Big Bang” season premiere.) In their season premieres, “Mom” pulled in a 1.6 and 7.59 million total viewers, while lone single-cam “Life in Pieces” drew a 1.5 in the demo and 6.37 million viewers. Both were down slightly from their season finales in May.

“Pure Genius” got off to a bit of a rough start, with a rounded-up 1.2 in the demo and 6.2 million viewers. However, that did tie the demo of both ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” (4.05 million total viewers) and NBC’s “The Blacklist” (5.49 million total viewers).

CBS affiliates in Nashville and Jacksonville were airing the Jags-Titans NFL game, so CBS’ numbers could adjust down a bit once Nielsen’s final ratings come in later in the afternoon.

ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” remains a solid anchor at 8 p.m., with a 2.2 demo (up a tick from last week) and 8 million viewers. “Notorious,” which this earlier this week had its episode order trimmed, did little to offer an argument against such a move, drawing a 0.8 in the demo and 3.81 million viewers.

NBC comedies “Superstore” and “The Good Place” were both up from last week. “Superstore” came in three tenths up, with a 1.3 in the demo and 4.15 million viewers. “The Good Place” brought in a 1.1 and 3.89 million. “Chicago Med” notched up two tenths from last week as well, to a 1.4 in the demo and 6.84 million viewers.

On The CW, “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” took in a 0.6 and 1.77 million viewers, followed by “Supernatural” with a 0.6 and 1.75 million viewers, steady with last week.

Fox had a World Series-less night while the Cubs and Indians relocated to Chicago for Friday’s Game 3. “Rosewood” drew a 0.8 in the demo and 3.36 million viewers. “Pitch” came in with a 0.8 as well, and 2.91 million viewers.

As a reminder, most of these series will see big viewership lifts once viewing within three and seven days is counted, though since most of those viewers aren’t watching the ads, they don’t translate to the ratings networks guarantee advertisers.
