NY Times Rips Trump Over LGBT ‘Fallacy': He Is No ‘Champion’ of Gay, Transgender People

The New York Times editorial board ripped President Trump on Monday in an opinion piece titled, “The LGBT Trump Fallout.”

The column begins by reminding readers that then-candidate Trump was handed a gay pride flag that featured a pro-Trump endorsement during a rally in Colorado last October, and goes on to argue that the president hasn’t done anything to help the LGBT community.

“After he was elected, some gay rights activists held out hope that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the president’s daughter and son-in-law, would be staunch allies in the West Wing, considering that they had traveled in liberal circles in New York,” the editorial board wrote.

The op-ed piece continued: “Yet, the nomination of several key officials, who have disparaged the L.G.B.T. community and sought to curtail the rights of its members, has exposed the narrative that Mr. Trump would be a champion of gay and transgender people as a fallacy.”

Executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality Mara Keisling told the paper, “It has been a catastrophe… Every twitch we’ve seen from the administration has been anti-L.G.B.T.”

The Times’ editorial board goes on to highlight many anti-LGBT comments and decisions made by members of Trump’s administration, including one nominee calling being transgender a “disease.”

“It’s not too late, of course, for Mr. Trump to act like the transformational Republican on gay rights that some of his supporters hoped he would be,” the editorial board wrote, also suggesting that Trump should urge Congress to pass a federal anti-discrimination bill.

“Yet his record of empty talk makes that seem as unlikely as the sight of a Republican presidential candidate waving a gay pride flag,” the piece concluded.
