A tribute to Victor Pemberton, inventor of the 'Doctor Who' sonic screwdriver

Victor Pemberton, a Doctor Who writer and inventor of the show’s sonic screwdriver, has died at the age of 85. Pemberton was one of a small group of people who both wrote for and appeared in the series Doctor Who, having played a scientist turned Cyberman in the 1967 Patrick Troughton story “The Moonbase.”

But Pemberton’s greatest contribution to the series was his invention of the now-iconic sonic screwdriver for the lost 1968 story “Fury From the Deep.” The sonic screwdriver has had many iterations over the years. It functions as a multipurpose tool for the Doctor that can hack, disable, and control technology, and a whole lot more.

In honor of Victor Pemberton, we decided to put together a tribute to the sonic screwdriver.

Rest in peace, Victor Pemberton. You’ll be missed.
