Trevor Noah Turns Zika Rant Into Pro-Choice Analogy
On Tuesday’s episode of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah spent some time talking about the Zika virus’s scary migration into the U.S. “Zika has taken up shop in Florida. It has turned from a Third World issue to a First World problem, and not in the hashtag kinda way — this s*** is real.”
Citing the previous request from the White House for $1.9 billion to fight the disease — but only getting a $1.1 billion commitment from the House along with enough riders for the Senate to kill the bill — Noah seemed baffled by the lack of follow-through from lawmakers. “The CDC and White House told Congress they need $1.9 billion to fight Zika, and the Republicans replied, ‘Well we’ll give you half.’ What do you mean you’ll give half? This is a disease, not a yard sale.”
Noah then discussed Marco Rubio’s comments that mothers whose babies are infected with microcephaly as a result of Zika do not have the right to abort the pregnancy. “I don’t understand how any man thinks that he has the right to dictate to a woman what they should do with their bodies,” he said.
After a rather long pause for applause, Noah made an analogy about male lawmakers making decisions that govern women. “Imagine if black people were the only ones to decide if white people were allowed to wear sunscreen. Imagine if that was the rule. It wouldn’t make sense. People would be like, 'What do black people even know about getting sunburned?’ Black people are like 'Look, yo, yo, I hear what you saying, B, I hear what you saying. All I know is, I’m pro melanin. That’s all I’m saying, I’m pro melanin.”
