Tim Gunn Voices a Travel Writer For ‘Mickey and the Roadster Racers,’ and It's Perfection

Tim Gunn may have found his perfect animated alter ego. The Project Runway: Junior host is set to debut his recurring role on the new Disney Junior series Mickey and the Roadster Racers, voicing travel writer Robbie Roberts. And he seems absolutely smitten with his dog-eared double.

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette, Gunn reveals that as soon as he read the script for Mickey and the Roadster Racers‘ Jan. 15 premiere, he knew he had to be a part of it. “I thought, I have to be Robbie Roberts,” Gunn says. “I want to be that person — and in many ways I already am!”

Gunn says he was immediately drawn to the character and his many layers. “I love the multiple dimensions of Robbie Roberts’ character: curmudgeon, skeptic, elitist, and also lovable, joyous, fun!” he tells Yahoo TV in an email. “Robbie forms opinions quickly and can be quite steadfast in those opinions, but when evidence to the contrary presents itself, he can be turned around. I respect where he begins a journey, but even greater respect for where he ends it.”

While Robbie appears to be the perfect character for Gunn, there’s one area where he could use a little advice from the Emmy-winning fashion consultant.

“Robbie dresses rather conservatively for my personal taste,” Gunn admits. “I’d like to see him step up his game with accessories. An ascot and some jaunty hats would be nice additions!

Gunn is already a Disney favorite — he voices Baileywick on Disney Junior’s Sofia the First — and he tells us he has a special place in his heart for the Disney shows. “The writing is smart and thoughtful, the storylines are educational and inspiring, and they make you feel good,” he says. “Does anything get any better than that?”

Mickey and the Roadster Racers premieres Sunday, Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. on Disney Channel and Disney Junior.
