‘The Walking Dead’: Josh McDermitt Previews Midseason Finale

Poor Eugene. He’s already lost one of his best friends this season when Abraham became Negan and Lucille’s first victim in the Season 7 opener. And now, heading into The Walking Dead midseason finale on Sunday, he’s trying to make sure the other surviving member of Abraham’s Army continues to survive. “He’s slowed down Rosita as much as he could with the bullet, but then they get back to Alexandria and see that Negan and the Saviors are there, inside the walls. They probably know that Rick is gone,” star Josh McDermitt tells Yahoo TV in the video above.

And though Eugene, as McDermitt says, tried to slow Rosita’s roll by highlighting the dangers of her plan, she remains committed to avenging Abe’s death by taking out Negan. Who just happens to be waiting on her home turf, with Rosita just itching to put her fresh bullet to deadly use.

“This is not a good place for Eugene to be in because he’s left without a plan,” McDermitt says. “I think that a lot of the goals that these characters have are going to be exposed. It’s a really exciting finale, and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

McDermitt, who says he thinks one aspect of Rosita and Eugene’s complicated relationship includes his being in love with her, also talks about how much he misses real-life pal Michael Cudlitz on set and what lengths he went to keeping those season premiere deaths a secret.

And he tells us about filming that dream family dinner sequence for the season premiere, one of the rare occasions when we see most of the cast together. “We couldn’t help but tear up a little bit,” he says, “knowing that we’re losing two of our friends.”

The Walking Dead midseason finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.
