‘The Real O’Neals’ Premiere: Catholic Guilt Can Be Funny

The Real O’Neals premiered on ABC Wednesday night, and much like the other family comedies that share the network, it was a success. The show follows essentially the same format as Black-ish or Fresh Off the Boat, but in this instance, the family is Irish Catholic, with a gay son.

The premier episode was built around the family’s middle child, Kenny, who is struggling with his homosexuality. His attempts at telling his family he’s gay result in comical misinterpretations, until he finally comes out during a family airing of faults.

Regardless of what could be considered “flaws” in their social circle, the family reminds us that the most important part of being a family is love. Everyone has struggles — and Kenny’s is being gay

The show has a great cast, which helped elevate the somewhat too familiar (tired) writing. And the pilot was plenty good enough for us to look forward to next week’s follow-up episode. Plus, it’s just awesome seeing former rebellious teen Martha Plimpton in the role of a conservative mom.

The Real O’Neals airs Wednesday nights at 8:30 p.m. on ABC.
