'The Good Wife' Scoop: Tom the Dog Returns

The most recent episode of CBS’s The Good Wife left fans panting. Partly because Alicia (Julianna Margulies) and Jason (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) finally had sex — and later agreed they wanted “it” again. But also because the hour introduced our new favorite character, Tom the Dog, the absurdly chill Chihuahua mix who is cradled like a small child by Mike Tascioni (Will Patton), ex-husband of Elsbeth (Carrie Preston), with whom he shares custody.

“We’ve been interested in the idea of emotional support dogs, and it made sense to us, as we built the Mike character, that he might benefit from one,” Good Wife executive producer Craig Turk tells Yahoo TV in an email. “Then it felt like high-strung Elsbeth might benefit, too. And if you begin to imagine what the dog in that situation would feel like… you get Tom. I named him Tom because, when writing the Mike character for the first time, I described him as hero-worshipping Atticus Finch — so, the To Kill a Mockingbird connection.”

We know from the photo above that Tom — played by a one-and-a-half-year-old rescue dog named Louie — returns in this Sunday’s episode, “Hearing,” which marks the debut of Matthew Morrison as AUSA Connor Fox. The grand jury against Peter (Chris Noth) is assembled and Mike, Peter’s lawyer, works with Alicia and Eli (Alan Cumming) to try to determine what charges are being leveled against the Illinois governor.

As for exactly how much we’ll see Tom as the show wraps its final season, Turk says, “We are not sure of Tom’s future, but currently, we’re imagining he might accompany Mike — or at least try — in 721 and 722.” So it doesn’t sound like Peter’s problems are resolved anytime soon.
