‘The Catch’ Star Mireille Enos Teases ‘Giant, Huge Cliffhanger’ in Season Finale

Good guys, meet the bad guys!

In Thursday’s season finale of The Catch, the two worlds of private investigator Alice Vaughan (Mireille Enos) and con man love Benjamin Jones (Peter Krause) come crashing together. Last week, he decided to choose her and work with the FBI to catch his colleagues in the Kensington Group.

In the finale, Rhys and Margot’s mother (guest star Lesley Nicol) comes to town, and she’s even more calculating than her children. As shown in this sneak peek clip, she has a job for Benjamin and her son: Snag invitations to an exclusive wedding, deemed the social event of the season.

Of course, with the Kensington Group, it can’t be as simple as that. And as Enos told Yahoo TV, the wedding winds up being the stage upon which her P.I. colleagues and Ben’s con men finally converge.

Read more for what else Enos had to say about the finale, Alice’s love of danger, and how much she loves dressing up on the show.

Yahoo TV: The Catch started with the premise that Alice is trying to track down her fiancé, who turned out to be a con man and stole all her money. But the show has evolved over the season, and now Alice and Ben are working together.
Mireille Enos: I always thought of this story as Romeo and Juliet meets Ocean’s Eleven. So, in my mind, these two people, even though their circumstances are what they are, are supposed to be together. Both Peter and I kept having to slow down our instincts to just want them to be together, and [showrunner] Allan Heinberg would say, “You gotta go on this journey. He really did betray her, even though it was circumstantial, etc., you have to go on this long journey.” We kept chomping at the bit to get them back together. I think it’s wonderful to see them working as a team. I’m hoping that’s where the show continues to go in Season 2. I don’t want to give too much away, but the way that they are a team as the season ends, when these two worlds come crashing into each other at this wedding, is really fun and very satisfying.

The Shondaland shows love ending seasons with a cliffhanger. Can we expect the same from The Catch?
A hundred percent. A giant, huge cliffhanger!

So, what else happens in the finale?
Like I said, through the season, the worlds have stayed fairly separate, except for Ben and Alice would meet in these clandestine ways. Now, toward the end, they are starting to work together, but still the private investigator world and the bad guy world are two very separate entities. Then you see Alice in the therapist’s office with Margot, so that’s the first step. And then, the finale, at this wedding, these worlds come together. I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s very enjoyable when it happens.

Alice was in love with Ben before finding out his real identity, but it seems like she’s even more attracted to him now that he’s a bad guy.
I’ve always thought that Alice has found a way to be on the right side of the law, but she really loves to get away with stuff. I don’t think it’s great for her to know he’s a criminal, but knowing he’s a man with these skills is exciting to her.

And with her job, too, she really seems to court danger, doesn’t she?
I do think she courts danger. You see her over and over again getting into physical altercations, taking risks. When she was in the hospital in Episode 3, she was hiding in closets. She clearly knows how to pick a lock. She walks right up to the line of danger. And the irony is that the man she chose was seemingly the safe choice. On paper, he was a perfect boyfriend. But then in actual fact, he has all of these skills that are in line with hers.

You and Peter Krause have such great chemistry. Was that luck, or did you work on it?
Luck of the draw! And smart producers and casting directors who have good instincts. But, yeah, we had never met, and it was very easy, very quickly. He is the most wonderful guy, so regular and warm. He is who he is, and he makes everyone around him comfortable. He wants to keep laughter in the room, and we have a great working relationship.

When you were on The Killing, you had to wear these drab, frumpy police clothes. But now you get to dress up and be glamorous. Is that fun for you?
It’s very, very fun. I’m in New York City for the Upfronts, and I met for lunch yesterday with an old friend of mine who was actually my acting teacher in New York City. And I had my hair in a ponytail and no makeup on my face and a baggy black jumper on, and I had a child in each arm. And she started laughing and said, “This is the real girl! That beautiful, glam girl you see is movie made. This is the real girl.” [Laughs.] But it’s very fun to play the other part of myself, which in my day-to-day life I don’t indulge.

Do you know anything about Season 2 yet?
I don’t know anything! I don’t even know if Allan Heinberg knows anything. It’s all to be created.

But there is something set up in the finale, right?
There is a setup. There is a cliffhanger, which is where we’ll pick up in Season 2. There’s a big problem to be resolved.

What has the fan response been like?
For the first time in my life, I’ve been tweeting! It’s been very sweet to see the response. People have been writing in and they’re so positive and encouraging. Lots of people are asking for Season 2. And then just even out on the street, walking around New York these past few days, there’s been a lot of wonderful response, people saying, “We love the show!” And that’s been great.

The two-hour Season 1 finale of The Catch airs Thursday, May 19, at 9 p.m. on ABC.
