The Best of TV at Comic-Con: ‘Sherlock’ Returns, ‘Luke Cage’ Goes Raw, and Rihanna Joins ‘Bates Motel’

As the dust settles from Comic-Con 2016, there is way too much news to wrap your head around. So we’ve highlighted the four biggest TV stories to come out of the annual event:

1. The ODB-assisted Luke Cage trailer: Set to the tune of the delightfully vulgar ODB tune “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” superhero Luke Cage blocks bullets and throws car doors with impunity. The upcoming Netflix show (launching Sept. 30) marks the first Marvel superhero franchise to be led by an African-American. And his unbreakable skin isn’t just a handy ability, it’s also a comment on current events. Executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker said, “The world is ready for a bulletproof black man.”

2. The Walking Dead introduces King Ezekiel (and his pet tiger): No surprise that another Comic-Con highlight involved The Walking Dead. The show premiered a trailer for Season 7 that started by refueling fans’ theories on who Negan killed at the end of Season 6 — but providing no answers. Instead, the trailer revealed the new character Ezekiel, who seems like he’ll be an ally to Rick and company, although the greater asset is probably his pet tiger, Shiva. Look out, dire wolves — there’s a new digi-beast in town.

3. Sherlock debuts confusing but intriguing Season 4 trailer: One of the few shows to match The Walking Dead in terms of devoted fandom is Sherlock. And in keeping with the show’s mystery, the trailer for Season 4 was far more confounding than revealing. Sherlock’s archenemy Moriarty seems to be back — although it remains to be seen in what form. He was “confirmed” dead in the New Year’s Day special but in the Sherlock universe, that word is pretty flexible.

4. Rihanna to play Marion Crane in Bates Motel: And last but not least, the biggest TV news out of Comic-Con was the surprise casting of Rihanna on the final season of Bates Motel. She’ll be playing the iconic role of Marion Crane, originally played by Janet Leigh in Psycho. Executive producer Carlton Cruse said the final season will be their “version of the Psycho lore.” Meaning, it’s certain that Rihanna will meet an untimely end, but our bet is that it won’t be in the shower. What’s yours?
