Diego Boneta Gives an Exclusive Tour of the 'Dovekeepers' Set

The Dovekeepers doesn’t premiere on CBS until later this month, but thanks to Diego Boneta, who plays Amram in the adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s 2011 novel, we can all take a walk through the Masada warriors’ barracks set now.

Things you’ll learn: Boneta helped design his sword, the person who made the leather armor is the son of a man who worked on Ben-Hur, and yes, those are the same stairs seen in Gladiator. That film, along with Troy and other epics, shot at the same fort in Malta.

The Dovekeepers, from executive producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, is inspired by true events: after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 C.E., 960 Jews sought refuge at Masada, a mountain fortress. The survival story is told from the perspective of three women (Cote de Pablo’s Shirah, Rachel Brosnahan’s Yael, and Kathryn Prescott’s Aziza) whose lives intersect. Sam Neill co-stars as first-century scholar Josephus.

The Dovekeepers airs March 31 and April at 9 p.m. on CBS.
