‘Maya and Marty’: Rudolph and Short’s Curiously Awful Variety Show

Let me begin by saying I like Maya Rudolph and Martin Short a lot. Rudolph is a regal comic presence with a rich voice she can use for clever impersonations, or as a straightforward instrument of pleasure. Short is one of the most gifted improvisers and sketch performers television has seen, as anyone knows who ever saw him as a guest on David Letterman’s Late Show, or, further back, on SCTV.

NPH Fills in for Nick Carter in BSB on 'Best Time Ever'

What’s a show to do when the Backstreet Boys are slated to perform on Best Time Ever but Nick Carter is performing on Dancing With the Stars? You send in ringer and Best Time Ever host Neil Patrick Harris. The former Oscar and Tony Awards host did double duty, stepping in for the otherwise-obligated Carter while simultaneously hosting the “Singalong Live” segment, where at-home audiences are surprised by hidden cameras in their homes and then sing along with the Backstreet Boys to win $1,000. Fall TV Scoreboard: Our Guide to All the Hits and Flops

Ratings are down across the board for the broadcast networks (thanks a lot, Netflix), we’ve seen very few runaway hits, and we’re still waiting for our first official cancellation. Although that last one might just be a case of Hollywood doublespeak… but we’ll get to that in a minute.

October 21 is Sheila Harris’s birthday. Who’s Sheila Harris, you ask? Well, she’s from Albuquerque, and she’s Neil Patrick Harris’s mom, and on Tuesday’s Best Time Ever her son set the bar high for anyone to ever give Sheila any birthday gifts in the future. The Property Brothers tackled her home renovation to-do list, some NFL analysts checked in on her fantasy football team, her fantasy football players shouted her out some happy birthdays, and some high-profile TV chefs gave props to her s

5 Fall TV Stars Who Deserve Better

This fall’s crop of new TV shows has been, by and large, a crushing disappointment. And that means that some great actors are trapped on some less-than-great shows. We don’t blame these actors for taking the gig — who’d turn down a network-series paycheck? — but we just wish Hollywood would find a better way to take advantage of their many talents.
