Brilliant and Boneheaded 'Survivor' Plays of the Week: There's No 'We' in 'Sole Survivor'

Which “we” will reign supreme?

This week’s Survivor treated us to what was perhaps the funniest, most insane discussion thread at tribal council in the show’s history. How many “we”s are there? Which “we” are we in? And whose “we” will triumph?

Well, the “we” turned out to be the alliance of Jeremy, Kimmi, Spencer, and Tasha, as they were able to coalesce and vote out Abi. Fare thee well, Abi-Maria, Most Unpredictable Player in Survivor History.

“We” thought Abi was untouchable, since she was the Goatiest of all Goats that any smart player would wish to take to the final. And Spencer had the chance! Not only that, but to take TWO goats to the final — Abi and Keith. Instead, he sticks with the big guns, not the goats. It’s a classier move, and a worthier one, but it might just cost him $1 million.

Boneheaded Play of the Week: Spencer

And for that, this week, Spencer deserves this title. It’s all well and good to say you want to go to the final three with the best and brightest. But look at how that turned for Woo in the Brains/Brawn/Beauty season — he lost to Tony. And Spencer, who played that season, might just come to rue his decision in this second chance he’s gotten.

After Keith takes him and Kelley on the reward challenge, Spencer finds himself in a great place. He’s got a final-three deal with them. He already had a final-three deal with Jeremy and Tasha. At this stage, with seven players, he is the swing vote — he is in the power position.

He knows it, too. As he says, he’d love nothing more than to go to the finale with Abi and Keith, two of the goatiest goats that ever goated on Survivor. If that was the final three, it’s hard to imagine any of the jury NOT voting for Spencer.

Instead, he goes with Jeremy, Kimmi, and Tasha to vote out one of those goats, Abi. Yes, it gets rid of the possibility of a girls’ alliance. But it also significantly reduces Spencer’s chance to be sole survivor.

Brilliant Play of the Week: Tasha

Poor Tasha. The immunity challenge is ROUGH — the girl nearly drowns! It’s scary to watch; we can’t imagine going through it.

But her strategic game doesn’t falter. While Keith, Kelley, and Spencer are on reward, Tasha is working hard to lock Jeremy down. She puts forward the idea of voting out Abi, mostly to appease Jeremy’s suspicion of an all-girls alliance.

Then, after the immunity challenge, when Tasha should rightly be curled up in a ball in the shelter, she’s hitting up Spencer, the weakest link in their “we.” Can he really trust Abi to the end? At this stage of the game, isn’t it all about loyalty?

She gets him right where he feels most vulnerable, because she’s right. Abi is a loose cannon. She might be the perfect goat to take to the final — if you can trust her to vote the right way. (Her vote this week illustrates this perfectly: Why on earth did she vote for Keith?!?) Though she had a major scare in the water, Tasha steps up to lock in Spencer and live to see another day.

Power rankings:

1. Jeremy — has an idol, is a major threat to win challenges
2. Kelley — has an idol, is the central figure in an all-girls alliance
3. Tasha — is showing some mad social game skills

Survivor airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
