‘Superstore’ Sneak Peek: Hero Worship Meets Home Goods on Olympics-Themed Episode

Attention, shoppers: Stars and the fictional characters they play are just like us when it comes to Olympic fever. Case in point: superfan Matthew McConaughey enthusiastically cheering on Team USA all over Rio. Need more evidence? On Aug. 19, tune in to a Games-themed special episode of Superstore, which features former gold medalists Apolo Ohno, Tara Lipinski, and McKayla Maroney, following NBC’s coverage of the competition. (Fun fact: This is a special “time hop” episode of the comedy, which is why Nichole Bloom’s Cheyenne is still pregnant. Season 2 in September will pick up where Season 1 left off, after Cheyenne gave birth.)

The Olympic-themed episode also features Saturday Night Live’s Cecily Strong playing Amy’s (America Ferrera) childhood hero, champion gymnast Missy Jones, who the clerk comes face to face with thanks to a Cloud 9 promotion. As seen in this exclusive clip from the “Olympics” episode, Amy is thrilled about her meet and greet, while Jonah (Ben Feldman) recalls his less-positive brush with fame. (Apparently, dinner with NPR’s Fresh Air host Terry Gross was not all it was cracked up to be.)

But given that this is a sitcom, the brush with greatness is likely to go awry. Judging by the scene’s end, comparisons and the inability of living up to the gold standard set by Missy Jones has already taken a toll on poor pregnant Cheyenne. In other departments, Olympic spirit causes Glenn (Mark McKinney) to suffer a case of extreme patriotism, Jonah discovers some dirt in Mateo’s (Nico Santos) past, and Dina (Lauren Ash) tries to plan a Closing Ceremony.

Let the games begin.

Superstore returns Thursdays at 8 p.m. on Sept. 22 on NBC. This bonus episode airs on Friday, Aug. 19 at 10:30 p.m.
